Why do brakes need replacing?
Brakes will naturally wear down with use. If the wheels and brakes system are all aligned properly and brakes are used correctly, they should last for around 50,000 miles. People who drive in a lot of stop start traffic or in a very hilly area will use their brakes more often and may find they wear away sooner.
In addition, brakes that haven’t been installed properly, are damaged or subject to a lot of hard stops at high speeds, may wear down unevenly. If the brakes get too hot, that can also warp the brake pads and discs.
Why are my brakes squeaking?
If your brakes are making a squeaking or squealing noise it is a sign that the brake pads are wearing down. They will most likely need replacing soon, that’s why they squeak. As a safety mechanism to let you know they need to be looked at, they are designed to make a high pitched noise when their condition gets to a certain point.
Why is my brake pedal vibrating?
This is another way your brake pads tell you they need to be replaced. As the brake pads catch on the wheel, they cause vibrations you can feel when you press the pedal down. If the pedal feels unsteady and is vibrating, that is a red flag for urgent brake care.
Why is my car leaking?
Leaving your car parked for a while and finding a wet patch on the ground underneath, is a sign that either motor oil or brake fluid is leaking. Take a look at the fluid, is it mostly clear and a bit smelly? That could be brake fluid. Either way, get your car booked into a garage to double check. Leaking motor oil isn’t a good sign either.
Why does my car pull when I brake?
If your car is pulling to the left or right when you brake, this can mean your brakes are worn on one side more than the other. Ideally your brakes should be wearing down evenly on both sides. It could also be a sign your brake calliper has got stuck. Both can have consequences if you suddenly need to perform an emergency brake.
My handbrake feels like it is sticking, what should I do?
A sticky handbrake can mean there is an issue with the release. Handbrakes that aren’t fully released put pressure on the brakes and heats them up. That can warp the brakes so get the handbrake looked at sooner rather than later.
