Exhausts

Book your new exhaust in Northampton

To keep your car in top running order, your exhaust is critical. A leaky exhaust may sound like you have an amazing new sports car from Italy but the reality is that it will be running under powered and costing you more money on your journey.

We recommend that, every now and again, you turn the radio down slightly and listen to see if it’s suddenly gone quite loud or if its dragging behind you along the road.

Our team also specialise in DPF Filter Maintenance. Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) are typically found in diesel cars, and capture and store exhaust soot in order to reduce emissions. These filters need to be replaced in time. Our team of trained technicians are on hand to advise on and replace yours if needed.

Alternatively, get in touch and well advise whether its all running ok for you.

What does an exhaust do?

The exhaust system on a vehicle channels the host gases that are produced by combustion engines away from the engine and out of the back of the vehicle.

Combustion engines work by igniting a mixture of air and fuel. It is these rapid, small explosions within the engine that fire the engine pistons that help to create motion. A waste product of the constant ignition of air and fuel is the exhaust gas carbon dioxide. However, because of the way that fuels are manufactured, there are many more hydrocarbon pollutants that are released. This is why efficient exhaust systems are important for limiting the damage done by vehicles to the environment.

Modern exhaust systems will help the vehicle to operate quietly and smoothly to enable efficient operation of the engine, reducing fuel consumption.

When does an exhaust system need replacing?

The tell tale sign of an exhaust system that needs replacing is when the vehicle begins to sound “throaty”. On pressing the accelerator and during acceleration, the car will sound louder, deeper and more hoarse, caused by a breakage in the efficient and smooth exit of exhaust gases.

A poorly performing exhaust system can be potentially dangerous for passengers in the vehicle as exhaust gases, particularly carbon monoxide, can seep in to the interior of the car.

If you suspect there is a fault with your exhaust system you should make an appointment to see your a mechanic for a visual inspection.

At Bodymek, our car technicians can provide a visual inspection of the vehicle to check for any breakages and advise of potential repairs. The exhaust system is made of many constituent parts, and it is often possible that only one part of the system needs replacing.

Are all exhaust systems the same?

As with any part of a vehicle, there are choices to be made if a replacement is required.

Most exhaust systems are made from steel. As with most uses of steel, it is susceptible to corrosion in the form of rust due to water vapour being a by-product of vehicle exhaust gases.

Whilst most vehicles will be suited to standard steel systems, stainless steel systems offer better driving performance. The main benefit from using a stainless steel exhaust system is the durability of the material. Standard steel systems often run too hot, which causes performance issues. Stainless steel systems can cope with higher temperatures, making them more efficient. They often look more desirable and can increased driving performance.
