Preparing your Car for Summer

We all take extra precautions to keep us safe when driving in the snow or ice, but we sometimes forget to do the same for summer too.

Although it’s hard to believe, the warmer weather is nearly here. Make sure to do these quick maintenance checks so your car stays healthy all summer long.

Check your air-con

A functioning aircon is essential in summer, but it can fail.

Normally, the culprit is because the aircon gas has released and exhausted, meaning there isn’t any more refrigerant to provide cool air. If this is responsible, the fix is incredibly quick and easy. At Bodymek, we can often sort it whilst you wait.

If this isn’t the issue, it may be because the unit itself is physically damaged. It’s not always a good idea to try and fix this yourself, as you may cause more damage.

Once your aircon is working, it’s also important to note that they aren’t designed to work continuously. Remember to turn it off when it’s not needed or open your windows instead.

Get breakdown cover sorted

There’s one thing that will ruin a summer road trip quicker than anything else – and that’s a car breakdown.

Unfortunately sometimes it can be unpredictable, so the best thing to do is ensure you’re prepared for the worst.

Make sure you have cover – or that it’s still valid – before your summer trip. This means you won’t be left stranded or with a hefty bill when your car battery dies on the motorway.

It’s also worth checking the small print of your policy, as there are often exclusions – such as a lack of maintenance or if you’re driving abroad.

Check your coolant

Although there are many reasons why you may break down in summer, a lack of coolant is often high on the list.

A large portion of issues will start from the radiator having insufficient airflow, which will then cause the engine to overheat.

Not only should you be checking your coolant level, it’s also a good idea to flush and fill your cars coolant system every few years. This prevents any build up that may clog the system. If you’re unsure, we can do this for you.

Check your wipers

Your windscreen wipers should be changed every year or so regardless, so summer is a great reminder to check them. They face plenty of wear and tear throughout the year, including the extreme heat and cold, high winds and more.

Although we all look forward to the summer heat, thunderstorms often follow heatwaves. Even if it’s sunny when setting off on your trip, it’s always wise to be prepared.

Now you’re all set! As long as you plan ahead and are on top of car maintenance, you can avoid many common issues and have a great summer out on the road.

If your car is due an MOT or service, it may be wise to get this done before any long journeys. Book in and check your car is ready to handle the summer heat here.
