A car can be a big investment, and we’d all like to feel assured that we’re getting our money’s worth. The lifespan of cars can massively vary depending on model, age and mileage – but there are some things we can do to help keep it in the best condition possible.
If you’re concerned about the lifespan of your car or have any problems that may threaten it, contact Bodymek here.
Keep up with regular servicing
Our first tip sounds obvious, but it’s something that can be easily overlooked in our busy lives. Getting your car serviced isn’t a legal requirement (unlike MOT’s), but it is imperative for making sure your car is in top shape.
Not only can it help identify any issues that may get worse further down the line, they will also change your oil and filters (depending on which level of service you choose.) This should help your car run more smoothly, reducing running costs and improving fuel consumption.
Take a look at the different levels of services we offer.
Kick bad driving habits
If you want your car to last longer, it’s worthwhile evaluating your driving habits to see if you can drive more efficiently.
Sudden braking and acceleration can damage your car in more ways than one. It puts stress on the engine, wears down tyres quicker and deteriorate brake pads.
Driving smoothly will also be better on your wallet. Braking and accelerating more gently can improve your fuel consumption and means you’re not losing out at the pump.
Don’t run too low on fuel
Aside from the obvious reason as to not run out of fuel (no one likes to breakdown when you could have prevented it!), running your tank low is incredibly unhealthy for your car.
When your car is low on fuel, your engine will try to drag in air and whatever is left in your tank. This is often mixed with debris which has found its way into the tank. If this is pumped through your vehicle, your fuel pump and filter can become clogged – this can be costly to fix.
Keep your fluids topped up
Your car relies on different fluids to operate day-to-day, such as engine coolant and brake fluid. It’s important to check the levels of this regularly, but it’s something we all forget to do.
If you’re not sure how to check your oil levels, it’s as easy as opening your bonnet and removing the dipstick. Wipe it and then dip – it should be between the minimum and maximum markers.
It’s important to also note the colour of the oil. If it’s dark it may need replacing (unless you have a Diesel engine, as dark-coloured oil is not a cause for concern for this.)
Oil isn’t the only fluid you need to check. You also need to check and maintain engine coolant, brake fluid, wiper fluid (to only name a few.)

Don’t rest on the clutch
Sometimes it feels more convenient to drive with your foot resting on the clutch. Even if you’re not pressing down, it can still create friction because the clutch release bearing will be in contact with the clutch cover when it’s not necessary.
Replacing a clutch is an incredibly costly repair and one that you want to avoid – so break the habit.
Sometimes, problems occur no matter how many precautions you take. For friendly advised from an experienced team, get in touch with Bodymek here or on 01604 589179.
