Your vehicle’s air conditioning system is made up of several components that all need to work together efficiently. When one part starts to fail, it can affect overall performance – and that often means lukewarm air instead of the cool breeze you’re expecting.
Checking your air-con
Many people don’t realise that your air-con isn’t typically checked in an MOT or service, so you often don’t know something is wrong until it’s needed most.
As expected it’s straightforward to test your aircon, but less straightforward to identify what the issue is. Although most cases will be that the air-con gas simply needs a refill, often there are other issues at play.
Why is my air-con not working?
Air-con regas needed
One of the most common reasons for your air-con not working as it should is that the air-con gas has released and exhausted. This means there isn’t any more refrigerant to provide cool air.
This is the easiest issue to fix. Any car garage can give an aircon regas, and it should be quick. At Bodymek we can usually provide this whilst you wait.
The gases that can be used in air conditioning units must meet new regulations to ensure a reduction on harmful pollutants. Particularly, refrigerant gases which use dangerous hydrofluorocarbons are being limited and removed from systems.
Blocked or Broken Condenser
Your car’s condenser is the bit that helps get rid of heat from the aircon system. But if it gets clogged up with dirt it can’t do its job properly and you’ll probably notice the air blowing warmer than it should. Because it’s right at the front of the car, it’s also more likely to get damaged by stones or just general wear and tear.
If your aircon suddenly isn’t as cold as it used to be, the condenser could be to blame. The good news? It’s something we can check out and fix without too much hassle.
Your cooling fans are damaged
It’s possible that the problem might not be with the cooling system itself, but with the fans. These fans are responsible for pushing the cooled air into your car’s cabin, and if they stop working, you’ll be left with either very weak airflow or just warm, stagnant air.
This could be down to an electrical fault, a blown fuse, a damaged motor, or just general wear and tear, especially in older vehicles.
Your refrigerant is leaking
Your refrigerant circulates through the system, absorbing heat from inside the cabin and releasing it outside through the condenser. As it moves through the various components, it changes from gas to liquid and back again – a process that’s essential for cooling the air before it reaches your vents.
If there’s a leak anywhere in the system – even a small one – that cycle is interrupted. Without enough refrigerant, the system can’t remove heat effectively, meaning the air you get inside the car won’t be properly cooled. Over time, this also puts more strain on other parts of the system, like the compressor, which can lead to bigger (and more expensive) issues.
