If you’ve noticed more potholes than usual lately, you’re not imagining it – fluctuating winter temperatures leave roads cracked and tyres damaged well into March.
Winter feels like it’s behind us, but the roads are still recovering – and so is your car. While most drivers think about tyres in the depths of winter, early spring is actually one of the most important times to check them properly.
Here’s why:
Winter takes a toll
Over the last few months, your tyres have dealt with cold mornings, standing water, grit on the roads and more than a few potholes.
Even if everything seems fine, wear builds up gradually. Tread gets lower, pressure drops, and small knocks can affect alignment without you noticing straight away.
The damage from winter has usually already been done by the time March comes around. Because the weather is improving, many drivers assume everything is fine. In reality this is when issues tend to show themselves.
A simple check now can highlight uneven wear or early signs of damage before they turn into bigger problems.
The impact of potholes
We see it every year: early spring brings a wave of pothole-related issues.
Sometimes it’s obvious, like a bulge in the tyre or a vibration through the steering wheel. Other times it’s more subtle – your car might pull slightly to one side, or the steering might not feel quite as straight as it used to.
This doesn’t always mean you need new tyres, it can sometimes be fixed by fixing your tracking or alignment. Leaving it too long though can lead to uneven wear or further suspension problems.
Catching alignment or tyre damage early can prevent you from replacing tyres sooner than necessary, and helps keep your car handling the way it should.
Tyre pressure falls during Winter
Cold air reduces tyre pressure, so unless you’ve checked it recently there’s a good chance yours dropped over winter and hasn’t quite been corrected.
Driving on the wrong pressure not only affects safety – it can increase fuel consumption and wear your tyres out faster.
It’s a small thing, but it makes a difference. Even being slightly under-inflated over a few months can shorten the lifespan of a tyre, which makes March a good reset point before spring driving properly begins.
Our tyre savings offer
If you already know your tyres will need replacing soon, March is a sensible time to do it before the busier months.
We’re currently running a Dunlop tyre offer at Bodymek throughout March:
- £10 off when you buy 2 Dunlop tyres
- £30 off when you buy 4 Dunlop tyres
The offer runs from the 1st until the 31st March.
Dunlop are a reliable, well-known brand and a solid option for everyday driving, especially heading into wetter spring conditions. If you’re going to be replacing tyres anyway, it makes sense to do it while there’s a saving available.
If you’re unsure about your tread depth or whether a pothole’s caused damage, just pop in and we’ll take a look. Get in contact on our website or call us on 01604 589179.
