When do tyres need changing?
It seems obvious, but tyres are the only contact that your vehicle has with the road surface. During the course of a driving year you’ll experience a whole range of driving conditions, from dry weather to rain, sleet and snow. Your tyres need to be able to cope with the changing weather conditions that driving in the UK brings.
The most reliable gauge of how often your tyres need changing is by assessing the tread depth on a regular basis. However, tread depth alone won’t give an accurate indication of the condition of the tyres. Even if tyres show good tread depth, they are still susceptible to age-related wear, delamination and deterioration that will impact on ride comfort, cornering, braking ability and fuel economy.
The condition of tyres will vary depending on a number of factors, including driving style and maintaining the correct tyre pressures.
We wouldn’t advise allowing tyres to get near the tread depth limit before changing them and it is worth considering changing your tyres for winter conditions.
Most tyre manufacturers suggest changing tyres every 20,000-30,000 miles, depending on how the vehicle is driven and the roads being driven on.

What do the tyre letters and numbers mean?
You may have noticed the numbers and letters on the side of the tyre before and wondered what they refer to. These tyre codes provide vital information about the size and specification of the tyre. Manufacturers use a standard rating system.
A 245/45 R18 tyre has a tyre width of 245mm. The 45 refers to the size of the sidewall in comparison to the tyre width. 45 indicates that the tyre sidewall is 45% the size of the tyre width. R18 refers to the size of the wheel that the tyre is suited to, in inches. The final piece of information relates to the tyre speed rating and load index, usually denoted by a number (for example 91) and a letter. The load index indicated the weight capacity for the tyre and letters T, U, V, W and Y, for most vehicles, indicates the speed rating. This information relates to the maximum speed the tyre is designed to perform at.

How to compare tyres
Tyres sold in the UK will use a rating scale to provide consumers with a choice between the different brands available. The EU directive provides a rating scale, similar to energy efficency so that customers can make a choice. Tyres are rated on three factors
