Our team at Bodymek is trained to service, MOT and repair electric vehicles, and we’re one of the few independent garages in Northampton equipped to do it properly. If you own an electric car, you no longer have to travel out of town or sit on a main dealer’s waiting list for routine work. Our workshop on St James Mill Road can handle it.

What our EV servicing covers
A common assumption about electric cars is that they barely need servicing. They have fewer moving parts than a combustion engine, which is true, but they aren’t service-free. Plenty of components still wear down and still need a careful eye.
Our EV servicing includes the usual checks you’d expect on any car: brake pads, brake fluid, suspension, steering, wipers, lights, cabin filter, the aircon system and the 12V auxiliary battery (the small one that runs the electronics, which many EV drivers forget about). We also check tyre condition and pressures, which matters more on an electric car because the extra weight from the battery pack tends to wear tyres faster than on a petrol car. If you’ve noticed uneven wear, our tyres team can sort replacements while you wait.
We’re an MOT testing centre too, so we can handle your EV’s annual test in the same visit. Electric cars need an MOT from the third year of registration, exactly the same as petrol and diesel vehicles.
Beyond routine work, we offer diagnostics and repairs. Our team can read fault codes, investigate warning lights and put right whatever’s causing the issue. If you’ve recently bought a used EV and want a thorough health check before something becomes a bigger bill, we can do that too.

The myth about main dealer servicing
A worry we hear often is that taking an electric car anywhere except a main dealer will somehow void the manufacturer warranty. That isn’t the case. Under retained Block Exemption rules in the UK, an independent garage can service your car without affecting your warranty, provided we use parts of matching quality and follow the manufacturer’s service intervals. We do both.
The result is that you get the same quality of work and the same service schedule, at a fairer price than a main dealer, with a local garage that picks up the phone when you call.
Can an independent garage service my electric car?
Yes. As long as the garage has technicians trained to work safely on high-voltage systems and follows the manufacturer’s service schedule, an independent garage is perfectly able to service an electric car. We meet both of those criteria.
Will servicing my EV at Bodymek affect my manufacturer warranty?
No. Under retained UK Block Exemption rules, you can have your car serviced at any qualified garage without affecting your warranty, as long as the parts used match original equipment specification and the manufacturer’s service schedule is followed. Both apply at Bodymek.
How often should an electric car be serviced?
Most manufacturers recommend a service every 12 months or at a set mileage interval, whichever comes first. Tyres, brakes, aircon and the 12V battery should be checked annually. We’ll stamp your service book the same way we would for any other vehicle.
Do electric cars need an MOT?
Yes. Electric cars need an MOT from three years after their first registration, then annually after that. The MOT covers the same areas as it does for any other car: lights, brakes, tyres, suspension, steering, visibility and bodywork. The emissions section doesn’t apply to an EV, but everything else does.
